Tennessee has a long-standing commitment to honoring diversity in adult education.  Recently, however, Tennessee has seen a dramatic increase in immigration (the largest growth rate for a non-border/interior state in the country). This, along with recent national events, has Tennessee residents struggling to cope with the rapid pace of change and increase in cultural differences in their local communities. Adult Education, therefore, continues in its efforts to assist adult learners to not simply tolerate differences, but to understand and appreciate them as well.
This year's celebration of diversity includes:

  • The Educator's Resource Toolkit - Lessons from the Holocaust, first compiled and published in 1996 by the Center for Literacy Studies and reprinted in July of 2001.  The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) has honored Tennessee by using Lessons from the Holocaust in its training programs for educators throughout the country.
  • Adult Education Teacher and Community Partner Workshop in Washington D.C.  In January 2005, Tennessee adult educators participated in a three day workshop at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington D.C. They experienced first-hand the powerful messages of the museum as well as participating in training sessions with the museum's educators and historians. After this moving experience, they returned to share diversity  information and teaching techniques with other practitioners and in their own classrooms.
PArticipants from the following adult education programs have taken part in the Appreciating Diversity professional development series since 2000:
    Blount Cumberland Jefferson Marshall Shelby
    Bradley Dickson Johnson Montgomery Smith
Cheatham Dyer Kingsport Putnam Stewart / Houston
    Claiborne Franklin Knox Rhea Sumner
    Cocke Giles Lawrence Robertson Weakley
Coffee Hawkins Lincoln Scott / Morgan Williamson
    Crockett Jackson McNairy Sequatchie Wilson
