| Tennessee Adult Education has a long history of
commitment to accommodating learning differences. Tennessee was
one of several states invited to provide feedback during the development
stages of Bridges
to Practice. Sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy,
and published in 1999, Bridges to Practice provides training materials
to help adult education practitioners to recognize learning disabilities,
implement screening processes, and know what to do when an adult
has been diagnosed with a disability. Since that time, Tennessee
has been involved in a number of Bridges to Practice development
and training processes. Currently, Tennessee is seeking to improve
its ability to address the needs of adults with learning difficulties
in the following ways:
- Keys
to Effective LD Teaching Practice - a resource book
for teachers serving adults with learning disabilities. Based
on Bridges
to Practice materials and Tennessee practitioner action
research, Keys to Effective LD Teaching Practice provides
information, guidance, and strategies on how to work with adult
students with learning disabilities.
- Training Workshops/Conferences Tennessee practitioners
had the opportunity to explore instructional tools and strategies
in Keys
to Effective LD Teaching Practice during February 2001.
Additional opportunities to explore issues relating to adults
with learning disabilities will be available at the Academy
for Instructional Excellence in July, 2002.
- Learning Disability Inter-Agency Collaboration The Office
of Adult Education and the Department of Human Services work to
integrate LD services for Families First Participants through
training of appropriate Tennessee agency staff/personnel in
Bridges to Practice. Since 1999, 150 Tennessee Families First
adult education practitioners received training in Bridges
to Practice with emphasis on awareness, screening, and instruction.
In addition, DHS partners at the state level received and delivered
training to specific county personnel in Bridges to Practice,
with emphasis on awareness and legal issues.
