PreGED/GED instruction is a core service of all adult
education programs in Tennessee. Tennessee is committed to assisting
adults in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for employment
and self-sufficiency. The Office of Adult Education continually
strives to effectively support adults in their pursuit of a General
Education Diploma. Current efforts include:
- Ongoing Professional Development: As part of its new
Professional Development Framework,
Tennessee has enhanced its professional development opportunities
for Pre-GED and GED instructors. The Academy for Instructional
Excellence, a 4 day summer conference sponsored by the Office
of Adult Education and the Tennessee Association for Adult and
continuing Education (TAACE), provides Tennessee adult education
practitioners with an excellent opportunity to improve their skills,
learn new techniques, and network with their peers. Throughout
the year, other professional development opportunities such as
the GED 2002 online courses: Part #1 - Teacher and Student,
and Part #2 - Teaching Tools, allow practitioners to continually
work to improve instruction. Committed to strengthening communication
among typically isolated adult education practitioners, the Tennessee
Office of Adult Education also maintains AETeachers,
an e-mail discussion list, and distributes the Adult Educator
Newsletter.
- The "GED 2002": The test of General Education
Development recently underwent significant changes. In reaction
to these changes, Tennessee conducted a rigorous training program
addressing the new skills, teaching approaches, and resources
adult education instructors would need to effectively support
students preparing for the GED 2002 test. Training sessions continue
to be scheduled for instructors new to adult education. In addition,
Tennessee maintains the
GED 2002 FAQ Bulletin Board with answers to common questions
about the new test for both students and practitioners.
