Tennessee is proud of the quality of its leaders. Supervisors in each of our 98 adult education programs continually strive to enhance their own skills as well as their program services to better meet the needs of adult literacy learners. Current leadership efforts include:
  • Continuous Improvement
As part of its Quality Improvement Initiative, Tennessee Adult Education has as its goal for ALL adult education programs to use quality principles, practices, and tools.   Adult Education programs are currently in the midst of a  5 year training and implementation process using the Baldridge National Quality Program framework to examine all areas of their program.
  • Professional Development
With the recent development of a Program Leadership Track within the TN Adult Education Professional Development Framework, Tennessee increases its long-standing commitment to excellence in supervision.  Training takes place at major annual events such as the Leadership Summit, the Academy for Instructional Excellence and Regional Instructional Workshops, as well as many other training opportunities throughout each program year.
  • Program Development & Enhancement
Tennessee Adult Education Programs are constantly seeking to enhance and  increase learning opportunities for adult learners.  Currently Tennessee programs are expanding  ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages),  Family Literacy,  and Workplace - based AE/basic skills programs.  In addition, Tennessee programs are participating in projects which integrate the EFF (Equipped for the Future) curriculum framework.
  • Reporting and Data Analysis
Tennessee is consistently working to streamline data collection and analysis for adult education programs in order to make data-based decisions regarding program improvement.  In addition to the yearly Tennessee Annual Report  (submitted to the US Office of Vocational and Adult Education), recent reports include a  1997-2000 Comprehensive Annual Performance Report  and Excellence in Education for the 2002-2003 program year. In compliance with the 1999 Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is also in the process of implementing a Comprehensive Data Management and Tracking System  (CMATS) which will further streamline the data reporting and analysis processes.
  • Communication
Tennessee supports and encourages programs and program leaders to share information and knowledge regarding program developments and AE best practices.  All AE Program Supervisors use an e-mail discussion list - aesupers - to share happenings, discuss ideas, solve problems, and celebrate successes across the state.
